The music ministry is designed to bring song into the Mass through a pastoral musician. The primary function of the pastoral musician is to be rooted in the Gospel and to lead the singing assembly into prayer, through celebration, preparation, evaluation, education and personal ministry.
The pastoral musician, in cooperation and with the assistance of all the parish ministers, supports the Gospel message through song and challenges the assembly to live their faith more fully.
The pastoral musician is any individual called by their baptismal promises to serve God and community with the gifts they have received to proclaim the kingdom of God.
Among the many signs and symbols used by the Church to celebrate its faith, music is of preeminent importance. As sacred song united to words it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy. Yet the function of music is ministerial; it must serve and never dominate. Music should assist the assembled believers to express and share the gift of faith. It should heighten the texts so that they speak more fully and more
effectively. The quality of joy and the enthusiasm which music adds to community worship cannot be gained in any other way. It imparts a sense of unity to the congregation and sets the appropriate tonefor a particular celebration. (Music in Catholic Worship).
We have the following Music Ministries at St. Lucy:
ADULT CHOIR
St Lucy has a long, continuous tradition of Adult Choir dating back to its earliest days in the 1950’s. Joining together in song, taking time to rehearse and be with one another has been part of Parish life here since its beginning.
Singers of all ranges (SATB) are invited to be part of this active Ministry. Ninety-nine minute regular rehearsals are the norm for most of the Choir season (September through May).
CHILDREN and YOUTH
Regular Masses, projects and showcase musicals are regularly scheduled for these age groups. Call for more information.
INSTRUMENTALISTS
Your instrument can add to special moments in our Worship. You are invited to make us aware of your talent and skill level.
HANDBELLS
These seasonal offerings are available for both Youth and Adult levels. Special feasts and seasons benefit from the festive sounds of a well-prepared group of ringers.
CANTORS
Cantors, Psalmists and Song leaders are present at all principal Masses. This Ministry utilizes unique levels of ability and is primarily by invitation.
